So I got my Solocomb in the mail today, and did the trial run with it on Fiona’s mane. Her mane was very long, and I’ve been getting nudged about shortening it for a couple of months now, but I really don’t like doing them by hand any more. It tears the crap out of my fingers and Fi’s not really a fan of the tugging sensation anyway. I did a little research and determined that they have finally developed cutting combs that work (the old ones were next to worthless) and after scouring the internet to find the cheapest available outlet for the poshest cutting comb (twenty bucks from Drs. Foster and Smith- fifteen bucks cheaper than anywhere else. Take that, horse catalogs!) it has arrived and I got to give it a go. I have learned two things. One, the end result is very much like a pulled mane, which is cool. Two, it is way more powerful than one would think, and you clip way more hair at a time than you’d expect. I did my best, but it was a learning process and whilst experimenting I pretty much butchered her mane. It’s not completely uneven, but it’s not good, and if I take any more right now to even it up it’ll be roached instead of pulled. But it’s a new tool, and with every new tool comes the learning process. And Fi was much happier with the whole ordeal; she barely bothered to shake her neck more than twice. My fingers are also intact. So that’s worth whatever friendly hell I’m going to catch over the goofed-up mane :)
