Duamuteffe: I was thinking of getting the print of Baba Yaga to match the print of Vassilisa you got me for my birthday. There's a sale on.
Owlvark: Cool.
Duamuteffe: I wish they did prints of all the rest of the illustrations from the story- I love the pictures of her riders. I'd like to have them all up on the walls.
Owlvark: That would be awesome.
Duamuteffe: You know, if you'd married a normal woman, she'd probably want Thomas Kincaide prints instead.
Owlvark: Noooooooooo! Instant divorce!

#The Owlvark comes out of the bathroom after a shave#

Duamuteffe: #sniffing# Mmm, what are you wearing? Satyr?
Owlvark: No, stately pleasuredome.
Duamuteffe: Oh, I get it, Kubla Khan. Or did you get a special version?
Owlvark: Yes. I decreed it.

#In the Thrift Store, looking at a shirt...#

Duamuteffe: I don't know, it's neat, but it looks all Nintendo-y. I'd look like I was part 8-bit.
Owlvark: Yes, well, aren't you?
Duamuteffe: True. #laughs#

(While driving home, listening to an 80's night on the radio, "Pump Up The Jam" comes on)

Owlvark: This always makes me think of someone with a jar of jam and a bicycle pump.
Duamuteffe: What, literal pumping, plus jam?
Owlvark: Yes, someone flailing away with a foot pump, trying to inflate the jam for some reason.
Duamuteffe: It's lucky I don't listen to this song on purpose, as I am never going to hear it the same way again.
Owlvark: More air! More air in my jam!
Duamuteffe: You know what it makes me think of?
Owlvark: Maybe they need carbonated jam for some reason.
Duamuteffe: That wasn't what- oh, never mind.

Duamuteffe: "So I left Tim a message and told him I'd bribe him with lunch at El Canello's if he took me shopping. I'm sure he'll do it if he's got the time, he's always happy to help, if you can get ahold of him. I mean, if you're in trouble, and you can find him-"
Owlvark: "What, he's the A-Tim?"
#pause#
Duamuteffe and Owlvark, in unison: "Da da da DA, da da DAAAAA!"

DEVOtional '09 Pics

The disguised members of Fartbarf project their catchy electronic hooks at us.

The Pittsburghian members of The Weird Paul Rock Band play a rocking set from Devo's Hardcore CD's while an entrancing Z-Grade flick plays behind them.

The Spudboys bring down the house- I swear they get better every year. I danced so much I'm still feeling it today.

Duamuteffe: "That's the place they let you pet the stingrays, and they bump up against your hands like cats. Flat wet sandpaper cats."
Owlvark: [Bob Fossil] "The sandpaper cats? The little wet flat sandpaper cats?
Owlvark: [Howard Moon] "...The stingrays?"
Owlvark: [Bob Fossil] "Yeah!" #mimes tape recorder# "Say that again?"
Owlvark: [Howard Moon] "Stingrays."

Best. Anniversary. Ever!

Spent at the beach, baby! It was 93 degrees outside, and gods only know how much hotter in the city (and our apartment...) and since we had an amiable and adventurous houseguest (not that we have any other kinds- we're very particular :) we decided to make a day of it on the peninsula. We aimed for the ten am swim opening times, ate breakfast, packed up our suits and towels, sunscreen, bug spray, and a picnic lunch, and headed to Presque Isle, deciding to get as much beach time in as possible before the severe thunderstorms that were forecast arrived in the afternoon. I guess the thunderstorms arrived for someone, but it wasn't us; we stayed until nearly four in the afternoon, and the weather was perfect the entire time. It was hot and bright with a strong breeze, and some heavy weather somewhere out of sight was giving the lake big rolling waves, which made it all very much like the seaside, except the water was cool, not freezing, and you could stay in as long as you wanted, or at least, until you got tired from swimming over the waves.
The weather started to close in around four, so we regretfully packed up and headed back home. Two showers later and I'd almost gotten all the sand out of my hair. :)
We then all went out to dinner at Red Lobster, and had some extremely tasty salmon- we approve of their new wood grill in a big way- and I had a few snow crab legs, as we also approve of their "pick two off this list for a very reasonable price" thing. We had intended to hit the ice cream place on our way back, but we were all too stuffed, so we settled for heading back to the apartment and watching the entirety of the third season of the Mighty Boosh.

The next day, as our houseguest had to return to home and work, we decided to have a continuation of our anniversary, at least as far as dinner was concerned, and went for candles, wine, cards, etc. It was really nice. We'd picked up a bottle of the same champagne we'd taken with us on our honeymoon- something called "Bubbling Catawba, " from one of the many local wineries- and it was very nice indeed. I used a bit to make some mussels in cream sauce, the recipe for which follows. Like all my recipes, it doesn't have much in the way of measurements, so your milage may vary.

Mussels in Technically a Cream Sauce:

You will need: two pounds of mussels, cleaned and de-bearded, an onion, preferably sweet, some butter, some olive oil, some garlic, some ginger, preferably fresh, some wine, a little cayenne pepper, milk, and flour. Also some pasta.

Heat olive oil and butter in the bottom of a large pan. Cut up onion and garlic, brown this in the pan. Grate in ginger. Add some wine (enough to provide steam to cook the mussels, not enough to drown them) bring to boiling, then dump in mussels and cover pan. Steam mussels for six to eight minutes. While they're steaming, mix flour into a cup of cold milk- say one tablespoon for the cup of milk, and one for every cup of liquid in the pan you're using to steam. Mix a little cayenne into the milk as well, to taste. Ladle out mussels into another container, discarding any that didn't open or those with cracked and broken shells. Turn heat down a bit on the pan, and add in the milk, stirring/scraping/whisking as you do so. Everything should thicken into a sauce. Carefully drain the liquid from the bottom of the bowl of mussels into the pan, and stir that in, too. Serve the sauce over pasta- we like linguini, but hey, to each their own- and you have the choice of either putting the mussels in your pasta or just nomming them alongside. Have with some of the leftover wine. Crusty butter bread is nice, too.

Woo-hoo! Beach day!

Presque Isle continues its tradition of awesomeness. The beach was hardly even crowded, and there were several free picnic tables to have our lunch on. We played the least impressive game of frisbee ever, and had nearly 45 seconds of swimming before the lifeguards announced the end of swim time. Oops. We'll time it better next time.
We then headed to Waldameer and wandered around checking out the new rides, and cheering to see the older ones still in place (the Wacky Shack and Pirates' Cove are still going strong) We're going to get the gang together one of these days and do a dawn-till-dusk run on the park and the water park.

So, I've found Shelfari to be completely addictive, at least from an adding books perspective. Since I didn't have a lot to do this evening, I started in searching and adding books from my collection, and the next thing I know it's 10:30 and I feel compelled to write a blog post about it. I don't really do the whole review thing, but it's definitely neat to have a list of my books in one place. If I ever get them all on there, that is.

Interestingly, I'm over 350 books now on my Shelfari shelf, and I'm probably only 2/3rds of the way through the books in the middle room, and that's at best. It could be as low as half, depending on just how many paperbacks there really are stacked against the one wall- I can't really estimate by looking at it. Plus, there must be another hundred paperbacks in storage at the Farm, and another couple boxes at Mom and Dad's. There's probably another easy hundred and fifty on my Amazon wish list- jeez, we're going to need a lot of bookshelves when we get a house...

What a gorgeous day! We spent most of it outside at the park on the lake, me with a book ('Conan the Conqueror, ' if anyone was bothered,) the Owlvark with his paints, and both of us soaking up the sun and breeze. On our way there we found a baby painted turtle on a median strip in the mall parking lot- how it got there is open to conjecture; we thought perhaps a crow or seagull dropped it, since we couldn't see him climbing the six-inch concrete edging on his own. We let him loose on the lake edge under some cover, after we got some pictures first, because he was *adorable!*
The Owlvark got a watercolor done, and I finished my book, and we ate chocolate and snuggled and had a ridiculously good time, and since the weather's supposed to be good again tomorrow, we figure we'll pack a picnic lunch, put our futon out to bake in the sun (we hang it over some chairs on downstairs' concrete half-court, and it really does perk up when it's baked) and go back to the lake again. We might even go wading- it's still a little cold to swim, as some college kids found out the hard way today #snickers# but it was certainly hot enough to do some wading. Maybe we'll see the turtle :)

Reason 1,000,300 why my life rules

As predicted, the Quake party ruled, marred only by a lack of Death, who we were unable to reach in time, and Gr3ywolf, who was busy. Dr. Demoniac held up his end as the only participating God of Quake, and the rest of us didn't do half-badly either. Much pizza and soda was consumed, and many insults were exchanged. All in all, it was a highly successful night. Next time, we plan to implement Mansgame for a proper DM round. It'll be nice to have my Uncle Deadly skin back...

"So, I could take the blender apart and clean it. That doesn't have any computers in it."
"You're not taking my blender apart just because you're fed up with the computer."
"You said I could, because I pointed out that it sounded awful when you used it to make the hummus."
"Oh! That's the food processor. The blender is the other thing. Blenders deal with liquid stuff and food processors deal with more solid stuff."
"Ah, because it's designed to chop, I see. So it's called a food processor. That's a terrible term. Very boring. We should think up a better one."
"Okay, like what?"
"The Smusher."

Nojim: "Hey, you know that 'Rock the Cashbox' song?"
Owlvark: "Casbah."
Nojim: "Yeah, that one. I heard it like, six times in 24 hours the other day."
Duamuteffe: "I mostly envy you- the Clash rules."
Nojim: "Well, yeah, but I rocked so much I literally ran out of cash boxes to rock."
Duamuteffe: "Casbahs."
Owlvark: "I bet the Sharif was super pissed."

So, it's been a pretty productive day here- we had a decent breakfast, the Owlvark worked on stabilizing T$'s computer for the nth time, and then helped him pick out new parts to order for it (that computer is so tricksey that we've decided to give it its own saga...) started working on another vintage radio he picked up, and got a haircut. We shoveled the parking spaces, I baked bread, and I tried out a new recipe for dinner (a sort of bacon and barley and spinach casserole) which turned out fairly tasty, if I do say so myself, and I ordered two security screwdriver bits so we can take apart and clean the Sega Genesis cartridges that were submerged in the flood. All and all, a pretty productive day, I though. We'll probably spend the rest of it snuggled up, drinking tea and watching movies, which sounds just fine to me. :)
